Antioxidants are chemicals that treat oxygen free radicals. Oxygen free radicals have been implicated as one of the basic causes of cell damage, which contributes to or directly causes inflammation, cancer, and aging. Free radicals develop after certain reactions between oxygen atoms. Ultraviolet radiation has been shown to produce free radicals. Therefore, the skin is very prone to developing free radicals since it is continuously exposed to UV light from the sun.

Antioxidants are chemicals which remove the free radicals. The body produces its own natural antioxidants such as vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), superoxide dismutase, and catalase among others. Many people feel that using skin care products that contain antioxidants can help reduce free radicals and the damage they would otherwise cause. There is a huge market that offers many different types of antioxidants in many different forms. While there is plenty of good scientific evidence concerning the role of antioxidants in the prevention and reduction of free radicals, there is not currently any proof that any specific skin care product or preparation causes a significant improvement; therefore, it is by trial and error that the user will discover what seems to work for him or her.
