Wrinkles in the face can be caused by several different things. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by the way the muscles move the skin. Similar to an accordion, the muscles around the eyes, in the forehead, and in the frown areas “squish” the skin together. These types of dynamic wrinkles are treated very well with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Although BOTOX® Cosmetic can be successful around the mouth also, Dr. Ronald Schuster generally recommends other treatments since BOTOX® Cosmetic can be a little more “finicky” in this area. Static wrinkles are those that develop in areas that don't undergo a lot of movement, such as the flat part of the cheek. These generally develop from sun exposure and other environmental and genetic causes. Restylane® and laser resurfacing are very effective for these types of wrinkles. The nasolabial grooves as well as the lines and grooves around the corners of the mouth are a combination of both dynamic and static wrinkles. Fat grafting as well as Restylane® and laser resurfacing are very effective for these types of wrinkles. Finally, there are wrinkles that develop because of constant pressure in certain positions. These include “sleep lines” and instances where protective masks need to be worn for occupational or recreational activities.
