Sunscreens

Photoaging – the cumulative damage to your skin caused by sun exposure – is said to be responsible for 90 percent of visible changes to your skin. That is to say that sun damage and ultraviolet light is the main culprit in visible signs of aging. It’s important to protect your skin from UV damage in order to prevent the worst manifestations of premature aging. Sunscreens we offer currently are:

  • Elta MD Broad Spectrum SPF 41-50, which is a cream containing zinc oxide and octinoxate. These components block out ultraviolet radiation and prevent future fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. Niacinamide in this product reduces redness. Elta MD is free from oil, fragrance and parabans. It’s transparent, and suitable for many skin types and skin colors.
  • ZO Occlipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 50, which is a non-greasy sunscreen with a sheer matte finish. You can apply this sunscreen by itself or wear it beneath your cosmetics. The silky matte finish of this product helps to blur skin imperfections, and it has a universal tint suitable for all skin colors.
  • ALASTIN Skincare HydraTint SPF 36 A lightweight, all physical, broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides daily protection from damaging UVA/UVB rays. The formulation is rich in antioxidants that shield against pollution-induced damage, ingredients that improve skin hydration and has a natural hint of tint compatible with all skin types. Hides imperfections and leaves your skin glowy!- All physical, lightweight formulation- Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection- Environmental pollution protection- Universal tint enhances most skin tones. Now you can shop ALASTIN Skincare with this link www.alastin.com/schuster&schreiberskincareYou should wear a sunscreen product every day. Even if you’re in an office all day, it’s good to have sun protection underneath your makeup for those sunny lunch breaks or mid-afternoon walks outside. It’s also a good idea to wear sun protection in the winter: Even though the days are shorter and the rays of sunshine are less direct, that UV radiation has the ability to cause aging and skin cancer nonetheless.

Retinoids

Dr. Schuster believes that retinoid therapy is probably the most beneficial product you can use. The downside is that it can be too irritating and might make your skin more sensitive to the sun. He recommends discontinuing the use of retinoid if you are pregnant because it is known to be harmful to a developing fetus.

Retinoid is a form of vitamin A sourced from Retinoic acid. Research has shown various benefits when it comes to Retinoic acid, such as:

  • An improved cellular maturation process
  • Improved cell regularity
  • Better distribution of the skin pigment (melanin)
  • Increased collagen formation
  • Decreased collagen breakdown
  • Effective acne treatment

Retinols are roughly 20 times weaker than Retinoic acid. You may see over-the-counter retinol products at the grocery store. These are generally the weakest forms. Retin-A Micro® and Renova® are brand names for tretinoin, which is a form of retinoic acid.

Use before bedtime, after washing your face. You can apply a moisturizer after applying the retinoid, if you wish. You can also mix the retinoid product in with the moisturizer, and apply both that way. Use the retinoid every other night for two weeks, then use it every night. You will begin to see initial results after four to six weeks of regular use. It’s common to experience mild redness and irritation, but you should discontinue use if the skin begins to burn or sores develop.

Moisturizing Products

Daily moisturizing keeps your skin nourished, plump and dewy. You may notice that your skin looks healthier when you moisturize regularly. It’s an important part of a daily skin care routine.

The experienced skin care team at our Baltimore practice will help you find a moisturizer that works well for your skin. The right product for you is determined by:

  • Skin type
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Goals for skin rejuvenation
  • Skin conditions

There is also a fair amount of trial and error when it comes to finding the right product. Our skin care team has many years of experience that they put to work in helping you develop a great skin care routine.

Moisturizers work by locking in moisture on the skin and forming a protective barrier against dry air. The two main ingredients in most moisturizers are occlusives and humectants. Occlusives coat the surface of the skin. Examples include petrolatum, mineral oil, and lanolin. They prevent evaporative loss of moisture on your skin. They also make your skin feel smooth, although some of them can be a little greasy. Some people are allergic to lanolin. Humectants moisturize your skin by attracting moisture from the air. Examples include glycerin, urea, and alpha-hydroxy acids. Humectants blur fine lines because the skin swells slightly as the humectants absorb water into the skin.

Pigmentation

Skin pigmentation is the coloring of your skin. Melanin is the pigment that creates skin color. Your cells produce melanin. When a pigmentation disorder is present – such as a melanin overproduction – you may have patches of discoloration, spots, redness or other problems. Hyperpigmentation and other problems are typically cosmetic in nature and do not indicate a medical condition. Dr. Schuster provides effective, modern treatments to reduce pigmentation disorders.

Some of the issues treated at our practice include:

  • Sunspots/brown spots
  • Melasma
  • Hyperpigmentation

Melanin is a pigmented chemical produced by melanocytes, which are cells found in the bottom layer of the epidermis. After the melanin is made, it is passed or transferred into neighboring skin cells. Melanin helps protect the skin by absorbing ultraviolet radiation. “Tanning” is a response of the skin to ultraviolet radiation exposure. The ultraviolet radiation causes an increased production of the melanin. When there are problems with the production, transfer, or breakdown of melanin, irregularities of pigmentation occur. Melasma is a condition, seen most often during pregnancies or with use of oral contraceptives, in which large, “mask like” patches of darkening appear on the face. “Sun spots” are the result of too many melanocytes and too much melanin. Sometimes the skin will react to trauma or inflammation by becoming darker. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Treatment is available. We offer several skin care options for pigmentation disorders:

We offer effective, medical-grade products within these categories. For example, the highest strength hydroquinones are available only through physician prescription.

Antioxidants

Many people are excited about the benefits of antioxidants for their skin and their overall health.

Antioxidants fight free radicals, which have been linked to cellular damage that is responsible for:

  • Inflammation
  • Cancer
  • Aging

UV light from the sun and from tanning beds is known to produce free radicals. Therefore, the skin is prone to free radicals since it is continuously exposed to sunlight in our daily lives. Research has shown that antioxidants remove free radicals. While your body produces antioxidants naturally, including vitamin E and vitamin C, many of our skin care patients report positive effects from the topical application of antioxidants. We offer a variety of such products and can help you find the right one for your skin. There is a lot of evidence showing the role of antioxidants in preventing and reducing free radicals, but there is less data related to their effectiveness at preventing the signs of aging via skin care products. Nonetheless, many patients like using antioxidant skin care, and our team is here to help you find the right skin care routine.

Specialty Products

Every skin care company believes that their products are the best. Many companies offer a full line of products that includes cleansers, moisturizers, antioxidants and their own “specialty” product. The company’s specialty product reflects their idea of how they can improve the skin. Some seem to work, others are merely “hope in a bottle.” But they all have their own “shtick.” We have looked into a few popular specialty products and supplied the following information as a guide to help those interested in learning more about these treatments.

Copper Peptides

Copper is the third most abundant trace element found in the body. Some skin care products that contain copper peptides have been shown to improve wound healing. It is thought that they act by increasing collagen production. Procyte® is a company which bases their products on GHK-copper peptides.

Growth Factors

Topical epidermal growth factor has also been shown to improve wound healing. Growth factors are chemicals which are passed between cells that help to give instructions for what the cells are to do. This is different from growth hormones, which are a type of hormone secreted by the brain. Some growth factors direct cells to make more collagen while others increase blood flow through the increased capillary formation. ZO Skin Health® is a company which utilizes their products, based on epidermal growth factors, as the cornerstone of their skincare line.

ALASTIN SKIN CARE- TriHex Technology®

This proprietary mix of peptides and ingredients supports skin health while improving the skin’s appearance. Other benefits include:

  • Supports collagen and elastin production
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Maintains results of other skin treatments

TriHex Technology was developed with the skin’s extracellular matrix (ECM) in mind. The ECM consists of molecules providing structure and support to the cells in the skin. Skin can regenerate itself more successfully when the ECM is functioning well. TriHex helps to clear out damaged and old proteins in the ECM.
