Types of Liposuction (Ultrasonic and Tumescent)

girl-sunbathingOne of the major surgeries for all types of body contouring needs is liposuction. Liposuction is performed in order to remove excess pockets of fat from various parts of the body, which means the face, the torso, and the extremities. At our Baltimore plastic surgery office, we’ve be able to help people enhance their figures and get a trimmer and fitter frame thanks to targeted body contouring.

What some people do not realize is that there are different kinds of liposuction that have various benefits. We’ll take a look at just three of the ways that liposuction can be performed.

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction is the liposuction that most people are familiar with. During the liposuction procedure, an instrument called a cannula is used. A cannula is a bit like a hollow needle in some ways. The cannula is carefully inserted into the patient’s skin in order to suction out the fat from the patient’s body.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction is one variation of Baltimore liposuction that is quite effective. During ultrasonic liposuction, safe high-pitched waves of sound are used in order to help break up the fat within the body. This makes it easier to remove fat, especially in areas of the body that may be more difficult to treat (e.g., parts of the face and neck, the lower legs).

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is an extremely safe and effective variation on traditional liposuction which is used quite often by many surgeons. During tumescent liposuction, the part of the body that is to be treated is injected with a special solution that helps numb the area and shrink blood vessels. The fat in that area of the body firms and swells, making it easier to remove.

There are plenty of other concerns to keep in mind when it comes to liposuction and other body contouring options. If you want more information, be sure to contact our plastic surgery center in Lutherville for a consultation.
