Ideal Breast Implant: A New Option for Breast Augmentation Patients

Choosing a type of breast implant for your breast augmentation surgery is an important decision. Up until recently women only had two main types of implants to choose from: traditional saline and non-cohesive silicone gel-filled implants. In the minds of many doctors and patients, saline implants have long been thought of as the safer option in case of a leak or rupture. On the other hand, many women prefer the natural feel of silicone.

Your breasts should look  natural and beautiful, and your implants should give you the peace of mind you deserve. This is why Dr. Ronald Schuster is proud to be one of 200 plastic surgeons in the U.S. to offer the new Ideal Implant®, a new type of breast implant that combines the most desirable features of saline and silicone implants. In this blog post, he explains the benefits of this new implant.

A Unique Design

The Ideal Implant® is a new FDA-approved saline-filled breast implant. It is the first new implant design in over thirty years. It has an internal structure that controls the movement of the saline so it behaves like silicone. It is made of a series of shells nested together and two chambers which contain the saline filling. The implant’s new shape is slightly curved around the edges for better contouring to the chest wall. The results of breast augmentation with Ideal Implants® are beautiful, natural and safe.

The Safety and Peace of Mind of Saline Implants

For years saline implants have been favored by many surgeons and patients due to their safety features. Saline implants are filled to the desired size with sterile saline. Should an implant rupture, the saline is quickly and safely absorbed by the body, posing no threat to the woman’s health. With traditional saline implants, the implant deflates and the breast becomes flat, which can be very unsettling until surgery can be performed to replace the implant. A rupture in a silicone implant is harder to detect. In fact, silicone implant ruptures are known as “silent” ruptures. Any leaked silicone tends to stay within the fibrous capsule  that forms around the implant. However, because the breast tends to look and feel the same, many patients are not aware of the rupture. An MRI can be performed, however this can be an additional cost and inconvenience for the patient.

The Ideal Implant® gives women peace of mind without compromising beauty. When an Ideal Implant® ruptures, the implant becomes smaller but does not completely deflate, thanks to the presence of two different chambers. The Ideal Implant® deflates enough so that it is noticeable only to the patient. This gives the patient enough time to replace the implant. Additional tests are not needed.

The Natural Feel of Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are pre-filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel, a thick, sticky material that mimics the feel of human fat. Silicone gel implants therefore have a more natural feel than saline. Silicone gel implants are also less likely to ripple and wrinkle around the edges. (In contrast, the saline solution in traditional saline implants moves freely within the shell, sometimes causing wrinkling around the edges.) The internal structure of the Ideal Implant® minimizes the possibility of rippling and wrinkling. The implant is slightly curved around the edges to fit closer to the chest wall, for a more natural look. The advanced structure of the Ideal Implant® supports the upper pole and the edges of the implant to maintain its youthful, attractive shape. When compared side by side with silicone gel implants, patients cannot tell the difference from the Ideal Implant®. The Ideal Implant® gives the feel of silicone gel with the peace of mind of saline.
