Moisturizing products make up a large sector of the skin care industry. There are many different types of products available. Your skin type, sensitivity, and goals may affect your choices of what products to use. “Dry skin” is usually the result of abnormalities in the most superficial layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. This layer helps to regulate water loss and to provide a natural barrier to the skin. Moisturizers work by improving the hydration of the stratum corneum and by providing a smoothing layer which can help protect the surface. There are two main ingredients found in moisturizers: occlusives, and humectants.
Petrolatum, mineral oil and lanolin are the best-known occlusives. Occlusives provide a coating over the skin. Acting as a barrier they help to reduce evaporative water loss through the skin. They help to make the surface feel smooth. The downside is that they are greasy. Some people may be allergic to lanolin.
Humectants attract and absorb water from the air as well as from deeper parts of the skin. As the humectants absorb water into the skin, the stratum corneum swells slightly, giving the illusion of smoother skin and fewer wrinkles. Glycerin, urea, and alpha-hydroxy acids are commonly used humectants.
Choosing a Product Line
Most skin care product lines will include some combination of moisturizing products as well as “special” products such as antioxidants or collagen enhancers. There is not much “science” to support any one product line over another. Finding the most effective treatment is often a matter of trial and error. The nurse specialist, however, offers individualized skin care evaluations and can help Baltimore, Maryland residents by providing recommendations based on their many years of experience.
