When it comes to body contouring procedures, several treatment options claim to remove stubborn fat and improve the body’s curves. If you are trying to find the best option for you, Baltimore plastic surgeon Ronald Schuster can help. Here, he compares two of the most popular treatment options: liposuction and CoolSculpting.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure which removes stubborn fat deposits from the body. During a traditional liposuction procedure, a cannula (hollow tube) is used to break up the fat and suction it from the body. Liposuction can be performed on multiple areas, including the hips, abdomen, buttocks, back, arms, thighs, calves, chin and neck. Patients usually take one to two weeks off from work following the procedure and wear compression garments for up to two weeks. Swelling and bruising are common and usually resolve within two weeks.
What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical and non-invasive body contouring procedure. This FDA-approved treatment uses cooling technology to freeze obstinate fat cells, promoting their elimination from the body. Clinical studies have shown CoolSculpting can reduce up to 25 percent of unwanted fat in the treated area. CoolSculpting shapes the body in trouble spots without harming the surrounding tissues. It is typically used for smaller problem areas and may require multiple treatments to achieve the desired results. No downtime is needed after treatment, though the treated area may look red temporarily.
Which Treatment Should You Choose?
The procedure best suited to your body is up to you and your board certified plastic surgeon. Together, you will discuss your needs and goals during a personal consultation. You should be open and honest with the surgeon about your desired results, and your surgeon will explain the typical results of each treatment option.
While liposuction is the more invasive of the two procedures, it can also provide the most dramatic results. Neither procedure tightens loose skin, so that will need to be a consideration to address during your consultation. You should also consider the downtime, as well as the recovery requirements as each, will help determine what works best for you and your lifestyle.
