On this page, we discuss:

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Commonly referred to as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is a facial plastic surgery procedure performed to reshape the nose for either cosmetic or reconstructive reasons. Rhinoplasty procedures vary significantly from patient to patient. Depending on your unique anatomy and goals, Rhinoplasty can:

  • Improve the outside appearance of the nose
  • Straighten and correct a crooked or broken nose
  • Improve breathing through the nose
  • Improve facial balance and symmetry

Your nose strongly affects the overall appearance of your face. If your nose is not shaped or sized in a way that is harmonious with the balance and proportion of other facial features, it can diminish the way you feel about your appearance and yourself. Nose surgery can improve your facial symmetry and improve your self-confidence.

What Issues Can Nose Surgery Address?

Rhinoplasty improves the overall appearance of your face. Patients travel from across the state and the country to visit Dr. Schuster with a variety of issues they would like to correct, including:

  • Nose that is too large or too small
  • Large, wide or asymmetrical nostrils
  • Bulbous nose tip
  • Upturned nose tip
  • Drooping nose tip
  • Crooked bridge
  • Depressions in the bridge
  • Humped bridge
  • Asymmetry
  • Undesirable shape

Hundreds of thousands of people undergo nose surgery every year in the U.S. due to its ability to dramatically improve the proportions and balance of the face with subtle changes. When performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald Schuster, you can rest assured that your nose is in capable hands.

Does a Rhinoplasty Affect Breathing?

In many cases, patients seek out rhinoplasty surgery to improve their breathing. However, during recovery, some may experience breathing issues due to internal swelling within the nasal passages. This usually resolves within 1-3 months after rhinoplasty surgery. Ice packs are a good way to help minimize inflammation, so try to have some on hand during your recovery.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Nose Job?

If you are considering rhinoplasty, we encourage you to discuss your goals, expectations, and wishes with Dr. Schuster in person (virtual consultations are available for out-of-town patients). Dr. Schuster has extensive experience working with nose job candidates at our practice, and he can educate you on the rhinoplasty procedure, the recovery process, and the impact that cosmetic surgery can have on your life.

Our team of medical professionals is committed to upholding the highest standard of care, and is happy to assist rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Ronald Schuster in any way necessary to help ensure he has the tools he needs to serve you.

We have worked with nose job candidates from throughout the Baltimore, Maryland area, and can help determine if you would be an ideal candidate for cosmetic surgery. It is important that individuals considering rhinoplasty (or any plastic surgery procedure for that matter) have realistic expectations, be making the decision free of outside pressure, and possess strong mental fortitude, as the recovery process can be mentally and physically trying. That being said, specific considerations for nose job candidates include:

  • Overall health
  • Shape, size, and symmetry of the nose
  • Shape, size, and width of the nostrils
  • Breathing irregularities or difficulties
  • Appearance of nose ridges or “bumps”

A number of characteristics can be corrected with rhinoplasty treatment, making it a wonderful option for individuals who are unhappy with the natural shape of their nose as well as those who have suffered a broken nose and would like to repair the appearance. Whether you have a prominent ridge that you would like to reduce or eliminate, or you are seeking symmetry, Dr. Schuster can refine the shape of your nose and satisfy your goals.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects or Risks With a Rhinoplasty?

Like any surgery, there are some potential risks with a rhinoplasty. This includes poor wound healing, skin discoloration, numbness, and infection. For this reason, it is essential that you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience like Dr. Schuster.

How Can I Prepare for Rhinoplasty Surgery?

There are a few ways you can prepare for your procedure to ensure a smooth recovery. First, try to set up a relaxing environment in your home to recover. Make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable, including pillows, blankets, water, snacks, and entertainment.

Next, make sure you get all of the prescriptions you need ahead of time. This will save you a trip to the pharmacy on the way home from your surgery.

Finally, ask someone to drive you home from the procedure. You won’t be able to drive since you will still be groggy from the anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty Techniques

Just like our patients, every nose and face is completely unique. Dr. Schuster knows this, and fully customizes every nose surgery to meet the unique goals of each patient. He strives to improve the appearance of the nose while ensuring it is well-balanced with the rest of the face.

There are two main nose surgery techniques:

  • Open rhinoplasty: This method provides for full view of structures of the nose, which allows for more precision.
  • Closed rhinoplasty: This technique may be used when little change is needed in the tip. All incisions are on the inside of nose.

During your initial consultation at our Maryland office, Dr. Schuster will determine if rhinoplasty is appropriate for you based on your unique goals and needs.

Is Rhinoplasty Surgery Painful?

During recovery from a rhinoplasty, most patients may experience some swelling and bruising. However, the pain is relatively mild and can be managed with medication prescribed by Dr. Schuster. To help keep discomfort at a minimum, try to sleep with your head elevated immediately following your surgery. This will not only control swelling but also help manage congestion.

Will there be noticeable scarring after the procedure?

Generally, rhinoplasty surgery doesn’t have any visible scars. This is because the incisions are either made between the nostrils on the underside of the nose or inside of the nostrils. With proper care, the scar tissue from these incisions can be minimized to provide a seamless look.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Rhinoplasty aftercare is relatively easy and comfortable. Dr. Schuster recommends taking a week off from work or school to recuperate. A splint is worn on the outside of the nose one week. After about three weeks, you should be able to return to all of your regular activities.

During the recovery process, it is important to avoid touching your nose and keep your head elevated and to ensure prompt, effective healing.

Dr. Schuster will thoroughly explain every step of your rhinoplasty procedure. He will provide you with detailed pre and post-operative instructions to ensure you and your home are prepared for a proper and full recovery.

What Should I Expect From My Results?

Immediately after your rhinoplasty surgery, you will have to wear splints on your nose to keep it from shifting. During this time, your nose will have some swelling, which will subside in a few weeks. After about 2-3 months, your nose will settle into its new shape with a noticeable difference in contour and shape. Subtle changes will continue over the next few months and, after about one year, you will be able to see your final results.

What Should You Avoid After a Rhinoplasty?

After your rhinoplasty, your nose will be incredibly sensitive. During recovery, make sure you avoid anything that may put pressure on your nose. This includes wearing glasses or strenuous exercise. In addition, it is best to keep the nose as dry as possible, so do not take a shower for at least one week after surgery. You can use a damp cloth to wash the rest of your body until then.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?

At the cosmetic surgery practice of Dr. Ronald H. Schuster, we understand that rhinoplasty cost is an important factor for our patients. To help meet our patients’ needs, we strive to make our cosmetic surgery procedures as affordable as possible, and we accept multiple payment options for our patients’ benefit.

We understand the value of affordable treatment, but we stress to our patients that cost should not be the only consideration when determining which procedure to undergo and which doctor to choose. It is important to remember that cosmetic surgical procedures are invasive treatments; as such, there are inherent risks, and most require a recovery period that can last several weeks to several months. Because of these considerations, it is extremely important that individuals seek only qualified, experienced plastic surgeons. Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Chief of the Plastic Surgery Division at Northwest Hospital Center in Baltimore and intimately familiar with cosmetic surgery, Dr. Ronald Schuster can provide you with the highest standard of care.

It is important to note that we cannot provide a quote for rhinoplasty cost without first discussing the patient’s goals in person. As rhinoplasty is tailored specifically to each patient’s needs, each procedure is different, and this affects the cost of treatment. When determining nose surgery cost, we look at several factors:

  • Overall health of the patient
  • Complexity of the procedure
  • Type of technique required
  • Necessary post-operative care

After looking at these factors and discussing your goals with you in person, we can provide you with a more accurate quote on rhinoplasty cost at our Baltimore practice.
