From achieving facial symmetry to accentuating the eyes and smile, a person’s nose can have a major impact on their overall appearance. However, when it comes to nose jobs, the “perfect” nose is not always the right nose for everyone.
When people think of rhinoplasties or nose jobs, most believe their new nose will look like the more Westernized “American nose,” which often highlights narrow, button-like features. However, this particular nose job look does not account for the diversity of shapes, features, and characteristics that people from different cultures and backgrounds have.
For this reason, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald H. Schuster offers ethnic rhinoplasty procedures for patients of color who are looking for a customizable cosmetic operation that enhances, rather than erases, their facial features.
What Is An Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
An ethnic rhinoplasty, or an ethnic nose job, is a cosmetic procedure that alters the nose's appearance to fit the facial shape, achieve facial balancing, and enhance the natural features of patients of color. Compared to traditional rhinoplasty, this cosmetic procedure is designed to treat patients with non-Caucasian noses. These procedures can often be more complex and require expert skill, as they involve the appearance of surgically creating not just one standard nose but rather many different kinds of noses depending on the patient’s ethnic background.
Nose jobs for people of color respect each person’s unique identity and celebrate their heritage while helping them achieve greater facial symmetry and their desired aesthetic results.
Are There Any Risks with an Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Like any other surgery, the ethnic rhinoplasty procedure involves several risks, such as:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Anesthesia complications
- Breathing problems
- Scarring
- Septal perforation
- Change in the sense of smell
- Asymmetry between nostrils
If you are a patient with diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure, you may not be suitable for this procedure, as these underlying health conditions may complicate ethnic rhinoplasty surgery and recovery.
How Long Does an Ethnic Rhinoplasty Take?
Most rhinoplasty procedures take between two and four hours, depending on how much surgical work is needed to achieve the desired look. Some rhinoplasty procedures can take even longer if a lot of grafting is required. Patients will see big differences early after surgery but they should be aware that their rhinoplasty journey takes many months and up to a year to see the final results.
When it comes to finding out the ideal nose shape for you, Dr. Schuster will carefully discuss your goals and take your ethnicity, facial symmetry, and aesthetic preferences into account. Dr. Schuster encourages you to bring your "wish pics" to your consultation. That will help the discussion about your goals and steps needed to get there.
What Is Recovery Like After an Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Although the recovery process can vary depending on the progression of healing of each patient, most patients can fully heal within one to two weeks. Common side effects such as bruising, swelling, and tenderness will be felt during the first few days of recovery. However, over time, these side effects should lessen. Patients should keep their heads elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling and prevent complications. Exercise should be avoided for up to two weeks after surgery. While patients can return to work after two weeks, they may still see improved changes in the appearance of their nose for up to 18 months.

How Long Will The Results from an Ethnic Rhinoplasty Last?
The results from an ethnic rhinoplasty are permanent. Unless a patient needs or wants a revision surgery, they should be able to enjoy their new nose for a lifetime. The only time a rhinoplasty may be negatively impacted is if someone experiences facial trauma that damages the nose cartilage.
