Excess fat below the jaw line, also known as a “double chin,” is a common problem for both men and women. This unsightly facial feature has many causes,
including weight gain, genetics and aging. But no matter what the cause may be, it is a source of embarrassment or frustration for many people.
If you are bothered by the appearance of bulging fat underneath the chin, Dr. Ronald Schuster, a respected plastic surgeon in Baltimore, has good news for you. Kybella is a non-surgical injectable treatment recently approved by the FDA to permanently eliminate the dreaded double chin — without surgery.
Kybella is a facial injectable treatment made of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that targets and destroys fat cells. While most injectables add volume to the face, Kybella actually reduces fat in the neck area, eliminating the unattractive “double chin” effect.
Kybella works by breaking down fat cells in the neck area, which are then naturally absorbed by the body. Because the fat cells are destroyed for good, the results of Kybella treatment are considered to be permanent. Any future weight gain will be more evenly distributed throughout the face and neck area.
Treatment with Kybella is quick and virtually painless; Dr. Schuster can perform one treatment in about 15 minutes. To start, Dr. Schuster will inject a non-painful anesthetic to numb the neck and jaw area. He will then inject the Kybella solution into the targeted areas. Once the treatment is over, you will see some redness and swelling in the treatment area. This typically subsides after a couple of days. The treatment requires very little downtime; most patients are able to return to their normal routine the next day.
Kybella treatment typically consists of two to four sessions of injections administered six to eight weeks apart. Depending on the amount of fat under the chin, Dr. Schuster may recommend up to six sessions.
You may be a suitable candidate for Kybella if you:
- Have excess fat in the neck (i.e., a double chin)
- Are 18 years or older
- Are in good overall health
- Have realistic expectations
FAQs about Kybella
Is Kybella safe?
Treatment with Kybella is safe and has been approved by the FDA for adults 18 and over.
Where is Kybella injected?
Kybella is injected under the chin and surrounding areas, targeting the areas with the most fat.
Is the procedure painful?
Treatment with Kybella is virtually painless. Dr. Schuster injects a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area and minimize discomfort. Most patients report feeling a warm sensation as the inject works to dissolve the neck fat.
Are incisions and bandages involved?
Kybella is non-invasive, eliminating the need for incisions and bandages.
What is the recovery like?
Recovery from Kybella is relatively quick. Most patients are able to return to their regular routine the next day. There will be some noticeable swelling for about two to three days.
When will I see the results?
You can expect to notice a slight improvement in the appearance of the neck one month after the first treatment. However, it may take about three months for the final results to show. The results are gradual, but nonetheless natural-looking and beautiful; you can expect a thinner, more well-defined jaw line!
How many sessions will I need?
The amount of sessions you will need will ultimately depend on the amount of fat you have on the chin and surrounding areas. Dr. Schuster can determine the number of sessions needed after examining the treatment area.
How long do results last?
Results with Kybella are permanent. If you gain weight in the future, it will be more evenly distributed throughout the face and neck area.
