PRODUCT LINES
Aging, sun exposure, and environmental factors all combine to affect the way your skin looks over the years. We all naturally lose elasticity and collagen in our skin as we age, and the toll it takes on our skin is compounded by things like UV radiation, air pollution, diet, smoking, alcohol, etc.
An effective skin care routine, along with our modern skin treatments, prevents the signs of aging and promotes a youthful glow and firmness.

These products tend to do more heavy-lifting than your over-the-counter options. Plus, you’ll get custom recommendations from our team after we assess your skin and current skin conditions.
We want these products to work for you, and we believe the bedrock of beautiful skin is daily skin care. These products can be used on their own, in combination with other treatments at our practice, and in combination with non-surgical procedures performed by Dr. Schuster.
SUNSCREENS
Photoaging – the cumulative damage to your skin caused by sun exposure – is said to be responsible for 90 percent of visible changes to your skin. That means sun damage and ultraviolet light are the main culprits in visible signs of aging.
It’s essential to protect your skin from UV damage to prevent premature aging. Sunscreens we currently offer are:
- Elta MD Broad Spectrum SPF 41-50: A cream containing zinc oxide and octinoxate. These components block out ultraviolet radiation and prevent future fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Niacinamide in this product reduces redness. Elta MD is free from oil, fragrance, and parabens. It’s transparent and suitable for many skin types and skin colors.
- ZO Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 50: A non-greasy sunscreen with a sheer matte finish. You can apply this sunscreen by itself or wear it beneath your cosmetics. The silky matte finish of this product helps to blur skin imperfections, and it has a universal tint suitable for all skin colors.
- ALASTIN Skincare HydraTint SPF 36: A lightweight, all-physical, broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides daily protection from damaging UVA/UVB rays. The formulation is rich in antioxidants that shield against pollution-induced damage, ingredients that improve skin hydration, and has a natural hint of tint compatible with all skin types. Hides imperfections and leaves your skin glowing.
You should wear a sunscreen product every day. Even if you’re in an office all day, it’s good to have sun protection underneath your makeup for those sunny lunch breaks or mid-afternoon walks outside.
It’s also a good idea to wear sun protection in the winter. Even though the days are shorter and the rays of sunshine are less direct, UV radiation can still cause aging and skin cancer.
RETINOIDS
Retinoid therapy is one of the most beneficial products you can use. Retinoid is a form of vitamin A sourced from retinoic acid.
Research has shown various benefits when it comes to Retinoic acid, such as:
- An improved cellular maturation process
- Improved cell regularity
- Better distribution of the skin pigment (melanin)
- Increased collagen formation
- Decreased collagen breakdown
- Effective acne treatment
Retinols are roughly 20 times weaker than retinoic acid. You may see over-the-counter retinol products at the grocery store. These are generally the weakest forms. Retin-A Micro® and Renova® are brand names for tretinoin, which is a form of retinoic acid.
Use before bedtime, after washing your face. You can apply a moisturizer after applying the retinoid, if you wish. You can also mix the retinoid product in with the moisturizer and apply both that way. Use the retinoid every other night for two weeks, then use it every night.
You will begin to see initial results after four to six weeks of regular use. It’s common to experience mild redness and irritation, but you should discontinue use if the skin begins to burn or sores develop. Dr. Schuster recommends discontinuing the use of retinoid if you are pregnant because it is known to be harmful to a developing fetus.
MOISTURIZING PRODUCTS
Daily moisturizing keeps your skin nourished, plump, and dewy. You may notice that your skin looks healthier when you moisturize regularly. It’s an important part of a daily skin care routine.
The experienced skincare team at our Baltimore practice will help you find a moisturizer that works well for your skin type.
The right product for you is determined by your:
- Skin type
- Skin sensitivity
- Goals for skin rejuvenation
- Skin conditions
There is also a fair amount of trial and error when it comes to finding the right product. Our skin care team has many years of experience that they put to work in helping you develop a great skin care routine.
Moisturizers hydrate your skin in two main ways:
- Occlusives (like petrolatum, mineral oil, and lanolin) form a barrier on your skin’s surface to lock in moisture.
- Humectants (such as glycerin, urea, and alpha-hydroxy acids) draw water from the air into your skin, helping to smooth and plump it.
Together, they help keep your skin soft and hydrated.
PIGMENTATION
Skin pigmentation refers to your skin’s natural color, created by a pigment called melanin. When melanin production is disrupted, whether from overproduction or uneven distribution, you may notice discoloration, dark spots, redness, or patches of uneven skin tone. These concerns are usually cosmetic, not medical.
Dr. Schuster treats a variety of pigmentation issues, including:
- Sunspots and brown spots
- Melasma
- General hyperpigmentation
Melanin is made by skin cells called melanocytes, which help protect your skin from UV damage. Excess sun exposure, hormonal changes, or skin injury can trigger increased melanin production, leading to dark patches or spots.
We offer several skin care options for pigmentation disorders:
- Sunscreens, along with avoiding sun exposure
- Bleaching creams (hydroquinones)
- Skin care products containing retinoids
- Chemical peels
- Laser resurfacing
ANTIOXIDANTS
Many people are excited about the benefits of antioxidants for their skin and their overall health.
Antioxidants fight free radicals, which have been linked to cellular damage that is responsible for:
- Inflammation
- Cancer
- Aging
UV light from the sun and tanning beds creates free radicals, which can damage your skin over time. Because your skin is constantly exposed to sunlight, it’s especially vulnerable. While your body naturally produces antioxidants like vitamin E and vitamin C to help neutralize free radicals, many people see added benefits from applying antioxidant products directly to their skin.
Although research clearly shows that antioxidants help reduce free radicals, their ability to slow visible aging through skincare is less certain. Still, many patients find that antioxidant products improve their skin’s overall appearance. Our team can help you choose products that work well for your skin type and goals.
SPECIALTY PRODUCTS
Every skin care company believes that its products are the best. Many companies offer a full line of products that includes cleansers, moisturizers, antioxidants, and their own “specialty” product. The company’s specialty product reflects their idea of how they can improve the skin.
Some seem to work, others are merely “hope in a bottle.” But they all have their own “shtick.” We have researched several popular specialty products and provided the following information as a guide to help those interested in learning more about these treatments:
COPPER PEPTIDES
Copper is the third most abundant trace element found in the body. Some skin care products that contain copper peptides have been shown to improve wound healing. It is thought that they act by increasing collagen production. Procyte® is a company that bases its products on GHK-copper peptides.
GROWTH FACTORS
Growth factors are natural proteins that help cells communicate and repair themselves. They’re different from growth hormones, which are made in the brain. When used in skincare, growth factors can encourage your skin to produce more collagen and improve blood flow by forming new capillaries, both of which support skin healing and renewal.
Topical growth factor products, like those from ZO Skin Health®, use these proteins to promote healthier, stronger skin as part of your daily routine.
ALASTIN SKIN CARE - TRIHEX TECHNOLOGY®
TriHex Technology® is a unique blend of peptides and ingredients that help improve skin health and appearance. Benefits include:
- Boosting collagen and elastin production
- Reducing inflammation
- Helping maintain the results of other skin treatments
TriHex was developed to support the skin’s extracellular matrix (ECM), the network of molecules that gives skin structure and strength. By clearing out damaged proteins in the ECM, TriHex helps your skin repair itself.
What Are Key Ingredients to Look for in Medical-Grade Skincare?
When choosing medical-grade skincare, look for these proven ingredients:
- Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin): Help boost collagen, improve skin texture, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
- Vitamin C: Brightens skin tone, reduces pigmentation, and offers antioxidant protection against environmental damage.
- Hyaluronic Acid: Deeply hydrates the skin by attracting and retaining moisture, helping skin look plump and smooth.
- Peptides: Support collagen production and help improve skin firmness and elasticity.
- Growth Factors: Encourage cell repair and renewal, promoting healthier, stronger skin over time.
- Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Exfoliate the skin’s surface, improving texture and allowing other products to penetrate more effectively.
- Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide: Mineral sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB rays to prevent sun damage and premature aging.
Our team can recommend the right combination of these ingredients based on your skin type and goals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Medical-grade skincare products can help treat a wide range of skin concerns. These include fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, dryness, and uneven skin tone or texture.
Because these products contain higher concentrations of active ingredients, they’re often better at improving skin health and appearance compared to drugstore options. Your provider can recommend the right combination of products based on your specific skin concerns.
Medical-grade skincare contains higher concentrations of active ingredients and is formulated to penetrate deeper into the skin than over-the-counter products. These products are typically backed by clinical research and can only be recommended or sold through licensed professionals. Drugstore products are generally milder, designed for general maintenance rather than correcting skin issues.
Most patients are advised to avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours after a chemical peel. This allows the skin to heal and reduces the risk of irritation or clogging pores. Your provider will give you specific guidance based on the strength of your peel.
Yes. Dermaplaning is safe for all skin tones, including darker skin. Because it’s a physical exfoliation method rather than a chemical one, it carries minimal risk of pigmentation changes. It’s always best to have dermaplaning performed by an experienced professional.
Absolutely. Men can benefit from facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, and medical-grade skincare just like women. Treatments can help improve rough texture, reduce breakouts, and minimize sun damage, helping men achieve healthier skin.
Both dermaplane facials and HydraFacials generally have little to no downtime. Some people experience mild redness for a few hours after treatment, but you can usually return to normal activities immediately. Sun protection is especially important after treatment.
Some treatments, like HydraFacials and dermaplaning, are generally safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, chemical peels, retinoids, and certain product ingredients should be avoided. Always check with your provider to ensure your treatment plan is safe for you.
If you’re looking to improve texture, hydration, uneven skin tone, or signs of aging, you’re likely a good candidate for professional skin treatments. Your skin type, concerns, and health history will be reviewed during a consultation to determine which options are safe and beneficial for you.
After your treatment, avoid direct sun exposure, harsh exfoliants, and heavy makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours. Stick to gentle, hydrating products recommended by your provider and wear sunscreen daily to help protect and maintain your results.
