OUT-OF-TOWN PLASTIC SURGERY PATIENTS

Located about 10 miles north of downtown Baltimore, the practice of board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald Schuster welcomes patients not only from our city, but across the entire country.

Some of our patients travel to us from outside of the United States. As part of catering to anyone visiting us from out of town, our staff knows how to help you with your travel plans, including how to get here, where to stay, and where to eat. Timeline for Arrival and Recovery

For most procedures, we recommend arriving in Baltimore at least one day prior to your scheduled surgery. This allows time to settle into your accommodations, complete any pre-op visits, and rest before the big day.

Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure. In general, we suggest out-of-town patients plan to stay locally for 7–10 days following surgery. This timeframe gives Dr. Schuster and his team the opportunity to monitor your progress, remove sutures if necessary, and ensure you're healing well before traveling home. Some smaller procedures may require only a few days in town, while more extensive surgeries like tummy tucks or facelifts may require a slightly longer stay.

Our team will provide a personalized recovery timeline during your consultation and help you coordinate your trip around it.

Lodging

Getting restful, peaceful sleep the day before surgery is highly recommended. When you’re well-rested, your body will be in the best possible state for undergoing a procedure and recovering afterward. Plus, you’ll likely feel better emotionally and mentally after a good night of sleep. You might be excited and a little nervous about your surgery day, which is completely normal.

So how do you create an environment where you can relax and sleep through the night? The first step is to find the right lodging. Whether you’re using Airbnb®, Vrbo®, or a hotel-finder like Expedia®, we recommend narrowing your search to the areas of Baltimore, Towson, or Lutherville-Timonium. For hotels, some of our favorites include:

Of course, there are many locals renting homes through sites like Airbnb® who cater to tourists visiting us from anywhere in the U.S. or elsewhere in the world. Please ask us if you would like more recommendations for local lodging.

Dining

Although you cannot eat anything after midnight the night prior to your plastic surgery procedure, a light meal is recommended in the evening. It may be easiest to stop by nearby grocery stores after you get into town to pick up healthy, light meal items. There is a Trader Joe’s nearby, as well as health and specialty stores like The Fresh Market and Graul’s Market Ruxton. There are also numerous conventional grocery stores throughout the Baltimore area.

Why Patients Travel to Dr. Schuster

Ronald H. Schuster, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon in the Baltimore metro area with decades of experience in cosmetic procedures for the face, breast, and body. He completed advanced training at Washington University’s Barnes Hospital and previously served as Chief of the Plastic Surgery Division at Northwest Hospital Center. Out-of-town patients frequently travel to his practice for the combination of surgical precision, advanced techniques, and attentive care. Frequently Asked Questions

It’s a good idea to begin planning at least six to eight weeks in advance, especially if you're coordinating travel, accommodations, and time off from work.

Starting early allows enough time for a virtual consultation, completing medical clearances if needed, and scheduling your procedure at a time that works best for you and Dr. Schuster.

In most cases, you’ll need to wait several days to a week before flying or driving long distances, depending on the procedure and how you're healing. Long periods of sitting can increase swelling and the risk of blood clots, so we’ll advise you on when it’s safe to travel. If you're flying, we may recommend compression garments, frequent walking breaks, and other precautions to help you stay comfortable.

If any concerns arise after you’ve returned home, call our office right away. Dr. Schuster and his team are always available to answer questions, review photos if needed, and guide you through the next steps. In rare cases where in-person care is needed, we’ll help coordinate with a local provider in your area and stay involved to ensure you’re supported.

Baltimore has four distinct seasons, so the best time depends on your personal preferences. Fall and spring tend to be ideal, thanks to mild weather and easier travel conditions. Winter can be a quieter time for scheduling, but it may bring colder temperatures and the occasional storm. Summer is warm and active, but it’s important to avoid sun exposure during recovery, especially after facial procedures.
