What to Expect While Recovering From Eyelid Surgery

Before and after images showing woman's results after eyelid surgery Eyelid surgery can be life-changing, but it’s normal to wonder about the recovery process. No one wants to deal with surprises. Knowing exactly what’s coming can help you relax and look forward to your results.

Ronald H. Schuster, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facial rejuvenation in Baltimore, Maryland. He understands your concerns about recovery and provides straightforward guidance to keep things simple.

Immediately After Surgery

When you wake up after your eyelid surgery, you will probably experience some mild discomfort, tightness around the eyes, and swelling. Don’t worry – this is temporary and quite manageable.

Dr. Schuster typically provides medication to minimize your discomfort. You can also apply cold compresses to reduce swelling, and you should keep your head elevated, especially when sleeping. You’ll likely spend a little time recovering at our surgical facility before heading home to rest and begin healing.

Your First Week of Recovery

In the first few days following eyelid surgery, you may notice bruising, puffiness, or slight irritation around your eyes. These effects are normal and typically peak around day three or four. Steps to reduce your bruising and cause it to resolve quicker include taking Arnica Montana, Bromalein (pineapple), and Papaya extract (Papain).

Be sure to get plenty of rest and avoid any activities that might strain your eyes or increase swelling, such as heavy lifting or extended screen time.

We’ll advise you on how to keep your stitches clean to help prevent infection. Your stitches will usually come out during the first week at your follow-up appointments with Dr. Schuster. Most patients can resume social activity after a week though it actually takes three months to see the final results.

Long-term Results and Healing

After two or three weeks, you’ll start seeing significant improvements as the swelling goes down and any visible bruising fades.

By four to six weeks, most patients feel completely healed and are thrilled with their refreshed appearance. Eyelid surgery gives you brighter, more alert eyes and a renewed sense of confidence. If your surgery also addressed functional issues like obstructed vision, you’ll notice the practical benefits at this point, too.
