The thought of balancing recovery with classes might sound stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. In Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Ronald H. Schuster, a board-certified plastic surgeon, works with students to make the process worthwhile.
Why Students Consider Rhinoplasty in College
College often feels like a fresh start. Some students want their appearance to reflect how they feel inside. For others, a nose job is not only about aesthetics but also about improving breathing, which can make a big difference in quality of life.
Parents are often involved in these decisions, and having the right surgeon can make everyone feel more comfortable. Dr. Schuster has performed many rhinoplasty procedures and is known for his safe and advanced approach.
Planning Around Your School Schedule
One of the first questions students ask is how soon they can return to class after surgery. Most patients wear a splint for about a week, and the most noticeable bruising and swelling improve within the first two weeks.
Many feel ready to go back to lectures after one week, though full healing continues for longer. Activities that put pressure on the body, like sports or workouts, usually need to wait a little longer. You can usually resume cardio workouts and weights 3-4 weeks after surgery. Yoga, pilates and any activity with your head bent down are best to wait six weeks. Submerging your head completely under the water, as in a pool, lake, stream or ocean, has to wait six weeks (going into the water keeping your head above water can start 3-4 weeks after surgery). Avoid wear masks or goggles for six weeks. Avoid contact sports where ther is a high likelihood of getting hit in the nose for six weeks to 3 months (wearing a protective outer splint can allow you to return earlier in necessary).
Because recovery can look different for everyone, it helps to plan surgery during summer or winter break, or at a time when your course load is lighter. Having open conversations with professors ahead of time can also make it easier to manage any missed classes.
During your consultation, Dr. Schuster will review your schedule with you and give personalized guidance so you know exactly what to expect.
