In her 2006 book of essays, “I Feel Bad About My Neck,” acclaimed journalist, writer and filmmaker Nora Ephron wrote:
“Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth. You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn’t if it had a neck.”
Although more people are taking better care of their skin, whether through the use of medical-grade skin care products, well-placed Botox or filler injections, or laser treatments, a youthful face can look unnatural against a neck with signs of aging and sun damage.
With today’s range of treatment modalities, there’s no reason to feel bad about your neck. Read on as Dr. Ronald Schuster, a sought-after plastic surgeon serving Baltimore and beyond, discusses the best treatment options to create a youthful and elegant neck.
Kybella
Dr. Schuster often sees patients that are bothered by stubborn submental fullness, or a “double chin.” Submental fullness can develop regardless of age, due to genetic factors or weight fluctuation, and it can obscure what would otherwise be a defined jawline and neck. Liposuction is a worthy consideration, but many patients can see results from a non-surgical treatment called Kybella, which is an FDA-approved injectable chemical that dissolves superficial chin fat. Kybella works extremely well and is performed as a series of short office injections.
Face and Neck Lift
In the case of moderate to severe saggy skin and muscle bands or cords, which can create the illusion of a “turkey neck,” neck lift may be the most suitable solution. These problems won’t respond to non-surgical treatment modalities.
Neck lift is often folded into facelift surgery, which improves the entire lower face and neck, but it can be performed as a standalone procedure if need be. During a neck lift, Dr. Schuster treats excess fat deposits and loose skin under the chin and on the neck, as well as muscle banding on the neck. The result is a more youthful and rested appearance in the lower face and neck. Necklifts can also be performed on younger patients who have a very full neck due to excess fat that lives beneath the thin platysma muscle. Frequently the muscle also needs attention. It can be tightened in order to give more support to the neck.
