Do I Need a Breast Lift, Breast Augmentation, or Both?

A close up of a woman's breasts in a black braWomen who want to modify their breasts have several options. Breast augmentation and breast lifts are two of the most common. While at first glance these procedures may seem very different, many women get stuck wondering if an augmentation or a lift is the better match for what they want to achieve.

Breast augmentation makes your breasts larger. By placing saline or silicone breast implants underneath the breast tissue, Dr. Schuster can create the breast size you envision for yourself.

Breast lifts raise elongated, drooping breasts. You may feel good about the way your breasts look while they are supported in a bra, but notice a considerable difference in sagging when you remove your bra. This would be a good indication that you may benefit from a breast lift.

Combining the procedures provides the best of both. If you are pretty sure you want to lift your breasts because they are sagging, then the question is whether you also want to boost their size. A breast lift on its own will not increase size; in fact, your breasts may appear smaller after all the excess, unnecessary skin has been removed. By placing implants in the breasts in the same surgery, the breasts are lifted and also made to be the size you want.

From the other perspective, you may be pretty sure you want larger breasts. Breast implants will not lift the position of the breasts, especially if there is significant sagging. A combined approach may be the right choice to achieve lift and enlargement.

Determining What’s Right for You

Breast surgery is ultimately tailored to your goals. That’s why it’s so important to discuss your options with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald Schuster. He has been performing breast surgery for many years and knows what each procedure is capable of.

In the end, both breast augmentation and breast lifts improve the overall shape and appearance of the breasts. To determine if one or the other is a better fit for your goals, you should consider your primary objective: Do you mostly want larger breasts? When you look at your breasts, are you mainly unsatisfied with how low they hang and the degree of sagging? Your answer may help you decide whether to choose augmentation, mastopexy, or both.
